Navigating a Place Setting
The place setting is like a road map to the meal. You can determine the number of courses you will be served by the cutlery at your place setting. The illustration of a six course formal place setting shows the forks on the left (Hint: the word left and fork have four letters) and the knives on the right (Hint: the word knife and right each have five letters.) Start from the outside of the place setting and work in towards the plate course by course. The fork and spoon at the top of the place setting above the plate is for dessert. If more than six courses are served, the cutlery will be brought with the dish. If you rest during a course, place your cutlery in the resting position on your plate rather than on the table – knife and fork in an inverted ”V” crossed at the tips. When you have finished a course, place your cutlery in the finished position – in a diagonal across your plate with the tips pointing to 10 o’clock handles at 4 0’clock.
