Gift giving etiquette

How much should you spend on a gift? Gifts should always be reflective of the level of the relationship you have with the person. You should never feel obligated to spend more than you can afford. Expensive gifts may send the wrong message and result in the receiver wondering, “What does this person want from me?” Alternatively, they may feel awkward and think they need to reciprocate.

Always make a distinction between personal and professional gifts. When sending a gift to a customer on behalf of the company, avoid gifts that look like a promotional item and choose gifts that are conservative and well made. Be cautious with humorous gifts unless you are well acquainted with the receiver and know he shares your sense of humor.
